读《金枝》才发现，这首歌描述的是五朔节/降灵节的庆祝仪式：

在英国的北安普顿郡，每户人家会在五朔节当天，依照风俗在自家门前栽一棵正值生长的十或十二英尺高的小树苗；鲜花撒满枝头，散落在门前。

直到今天，（在英国的）康沃尔郡的人们仍然保留了许多古老的习俗，其中就包括五朔节的仪礼。人们把走廊用大枫树和山楂树的青枝装饰，在屋前种树，或者准确地说是栽种树根。

英国北部的古老习俗是，5月1日那天，年轻人凌晨就起床；吹着喇叭，在音乐的伴奏下，来到树林里；把砍下的枝条，用花束、花冠装饰起来；日出时分，回到家中，在门窗上插好这些枝条。

在英国中南部的伯克郡，一个叫阿宾顿的地方，过去年轻人每逢5月1日很早就起床，聚集在一起，高声齐唱赞美诗。其中的两段歌词如下：
